"Shadia Simmons is the extremely talented sixteen year-old Toronto actress who you might have seen on popular series ranging from the ZACK FILES to GOOSEBUMPS to ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK. We recently caught up with Shadia and had a chance to find out what some of her interests are.
Q: What is your all time favourite movie(s)?
A: That is a really hard one. I love movies of all types, from Disney animated movies to action ones, but right now I would have to say it is LOVE AND BASKETBALL.
Q: What actor would you most like to work with?
A: We have a lot of great actors in Canada, but if I had to choose I would love to work with Jim Carrey.
Q: If you could write, direct and star in you own movie, what would it be about?
A: I would do it about the stresses of being a teenager.
Q: What's the biggest difference between working on a movie and working on a tv show?
A: I would have to say it is time. On a tv show you usually film between 13-26 episodes and that can range from 3-6 months of filming a year. Spending that much time with a cast and crew of about 100, you develop close friendships and it is like a second family you are seeing everyday during filming. You can also develp close friendships on movie sets, but the filming time isshorter and we don't return for a new season and reconnect.
Q: Are you attending school or are you being home schooled? How do you balance school and work?
A: Right now I am being home schooled through a correspondence program for this semester. In February I will be attending school for my last semester of high school. It is hard to balance school and work sometimes; but fortunately, I have been able to do it thanks to some great tutors, teachers at school, my parents and of course a desire to accomplish my goals.
Q: Where would you like to see yourself in 10 years?
A: Happy, successful, married and living a well balanced life.
Q: What's the best piece of advice that a peer has given you? Who gave you the advice?
A: "Don't be afraid to try new things". I use to be afraid of trying new things because I was afraid of getting hurt or eating new things because it didn't look appetizing. A good friend of mine told me if you don't like the way it tastes you don't have to eat it again. I don't want to get old and look back and say, "I should have tried that or took a chance at that". Her advice gave me a new attitude towars how I am going to live my life; I'm not going to be afraid of taking chances anymore.
Q: What are your views of singers crossing over to acting? Actors to singers?
A: Personally, I think it is great! There are so many multi-talented people out there. When they cross over and they are successful, it is so exciting to see.
Q: Any good albums you've been listening to lately?
A: Wow, that is a hard one to answer. I love all types of music. If I have to say what is in my CD player right at this moment it would have to be, "The Diary of Alicia Keys", and "Floetry Floetic."
Q: Are there any Canadian actors of singers who you look up to?
A: Another tough question, we have so many talented actors and singers in Canada and I have a long list, but I had to choose, again I would have to say Jim Carrey. I have watched everything he has been in and I would love to have a chance to meet and act with him one day. It's such a bonus that he is Canadian.
