Can I ask serious(ly off topic) question or two? Why are Trucker hats 'cool'? They're hideous. Why does wearing a trucker hat make you cool? I repeat again: They're hideous. I think cool kids should wear berrets instead. Or bowler hats! I want a bowler hat... that would be so cool And does being a geek mean you can't bee cool and vice versa? Because I think I'm a bit of a geek *schnort* but I also have some pretty cool clothes (cool in an individual rather than fashionable way, granted), play guitar (badly, granted), and have a groovy room (in a very pink, artsy fartsy way) and a phrenology hear (which I find so unspeakable cool). I have come to the following conclusion: There are two types of cool. Type the first: popular, fashionable, mainstream obnoxious cool. This is conventionally what is thought of as cool. Type the second: hip. Harder to recognise and is highly individual to each person. Although the carriers or hip are rarely recognised by those who recognise mainstream cool, they are actually a darn site cooler just because they don't care for cool.

:-/Well I wear trucker hats. I wear all types of hats. Im a "hat girl" if you wanna call me that. I think trucker hats are cute. You just gotta know how to wear them the right way and with certain clothes. Like I have 7 Von Dutch ones that are different colors and I wear them with different outfits. And I have some others that say funny stuff on them. Hey, they come in handy when you're having a bad hair day. ;D

eww, Von Dutch. you got a real knack for liking what I hate and vis versa, PIP. Trucker hats are popular because a few famous celebrities wore them, and people define cool by what they see on tv and movies. HS: well, I was reffering to mainstream cool. which is kinda the opposite of geek.

Can I ask serious(ly off topic) question or two? Why are Trucker hats 'cool'? They're hideous. Why does wearing a trucker hat make you cool? I repeat again: They're hideous. If trucker hats are cool, then my dad must be really cool and ahead of the times, as he has been wearing them for years! Can't imagine paying money for them, when a lot of businesses give them away for free. And does being a geek mean you can't bee cool and vice versa? Oddly enough, I was just coming on this board to post something about Marshall being cool or not. I think Marshall is a geek in that he is very smart, science oriented, etc. But he seems to have lots of friends, I think because he is also confident and friendly. Generally people who are confident in whatever they do, whether they are geeky or musical or artsy or whatever, tend to be at least somewhat popular. I think that is why Lucas seems to be a little less popular; not because he is smart, but because he is shy, and his conspiracy theories probably make people think he is a little weird.
I don't understand why TV shows always try to portray smart kids as unpopular. In my school, most of the really popular kids got very good grades. Of course, it was a very small school and we all knew each other well anyway. The only true "geeks" were a few guys who didn't make very good grades, were kind of shy, not very stylish or athletic. Not bad guys, just not very popular. Let me tell you, it is true that none of that matters after you graduate!

That's the spirit! This is now incredibly off topic now. What have we learned so far? Marshall = geek (in a cool way) but Noah = considered cool by his peers (which is good if he likes his peers). *presses hands together, flares nostrils and purses lips*

That is so true. I just finished my first year of college and none of that matters there at all. Who gives a "you know what" what you were in High School...you are in a total different ball game once you enter college. Now I was very popular in High School...Im not gonna lie...but when I went to college, that didnt matter. But luckily for me I just am cool...so it was kinda the same for me ;D Hahaha...

well, a nerd can be cool, but geek generally implies not cool. and being cool and having friends are not the same. the weird goth kids arent cool but they have lots of friends.

eh, it plays off of two things. smart people are usually "different" somehow, so they won't be popular with people. A more logical one - popular people are usually into sports. People who devote time to sports often don't get enough time for homework or studing and their grades take a blow. Put a smart kid onto a sports team and I think you'll see his grades fall a little.

Im gonna have to agree with Scott.... I too NEVER study, NEVER do homework, and I would always get straight A's and an occasional B.

I must also raise my hand and say that I'm another one of those people who didn't work very hard - it looked like it (because I was quiet and 'conciencious' (whatever that means) but I coasted on minimum effort, got 'okay grades' in most classes but wheneve exams cam around I got As and Bs without revising. But I was never 'popular' (I think things here work a little differently than over there) - I blame this on my integrity: my own standards were (and still are) more important to me than those of the chattering masses. I never did stop asking why people did stupid things or why being clever was derided when really it's what you want if you plan to be well off and thus I never did the stupid things. But as everybody got older the groups grew less defined and most people stopped caring about what you 'should' and 'shouldn't' do - grudging respect even grew between people who had previously been on opposite 'sides'. Plus by then the majority of the truly idiotic ones had left. I think the reason 'smart' kids and 'jock' kids don't get along is perspective - 'jocks' think they're superior because they're bigger and stronger and sports are more important than academics. Smart kids think they're superior because they're more intelligent and they've got potential to really go places. Yet they can't express this too openly as the jocks are more than capable of making them go squish. And arty types think that both academics and sports are overrated Seriously, everybody secretly thinks that the way they are or are striving to be is the best way to be. Anybody who isn't similar enough to them is not in the in-group. Highschool is a sort of microcosm of the whole world in ways.

you learn the material when it is presented or already know it. You don't need to study if you know the material. Some classes I don't study for and gets "A" on tests that others get "C" on after studying. I know the material when it is presented. Some of us get it easily and some of us need extra practice.

I agree. Me, I just have to listen in class and I'll do fine on tests.
