I was doing some random research on Wormholes and Blackholes and I came across a certain physicists by the name of John Wheeler. He was the man who first used the term Wormhole.
Coincidence? I think NOT!
Or maybe it was...but I think that might've been a fun little something Jim R. or someone slipped in.

You could ask Jeff in the creator's corner, though he doesnt seem to come around too often anymore. I'd give it 50/50 chance it was coincidence or on purpose.

Wheeler isn't that uncommon of a last name, is it?

I don't know any Wheelers but you may be right. I might be jumping to conclusions, but one can hope.

I've known three teachers with the surname Wheeler - I think it's more common than it first appears

There was a character on the sitcom Taxi who was called Bobby Wheeler. Maybe the creators are Taxi fans and decided to give Marshall that name. Of course, I'm joking. I doubt that's the reason they gave him the surname Wheeler. It's possible that the creators knew about John Wheeler and that was the reason they gave Marshall his surname. On the other hand, it could just be a coincidence. I'm leaning more towards it being a coincidence, although it may not have been. EDIT: To further support my Taxi theory, for the first season of Taxi, an actor on the show was called Randall Carver. His character was dropped after the first season, and we never saw him again. And what is Lucas's surname? RANDALL! So, there we have it. The creators were fans of Taxi and they were inspired to name some of their characters after people/characters on the show. Of course, I'm joking again. I'd like to think that the creators enjoyed Taxi, as I think it's a superb show, but I doubt that even if they did like it, they'd use it as an influence for naming their characters.
